Update SmartCW over its cable

The newest firmware from your browser and SmartCW's USB-C cable: the page restarts it into its update mode, writes the release onto it and checks that it comes back running it. Your settings, memories and call stay as they were. For SmartCWs made by RF.Guru, with firmware 2.3.0 or newer.

Older firmware, or a SmartCW you built yourself? Update it by hand, as the firmware section shows: it takes a minute.

What it takes

  • Chrome, Edge, Brave or another Chromium browser, on a desktop or laptop: Windows, macOS, Linux or ChromeOS. Firefox, Safari and phones have no Web Serial to reach SmartCW with.
  • In Brave, brave://flags/#file-system-access-api turned on for the page to copy the firmware onto RPI-RP2 itself. Without it you drag one file there, and the page does the rest.
  • A USB-C data cable, and no logger or serial monitor holding SmartCW's port while it runs.
  • A SmartCW made by RF.Guru: the page checks its serial number and chip with RF.Guru's bench records before it writes anything.
  • On Linux, your user in the serial ports' group — dialout on Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora, uucp on Arch — and a file manager or automounter that mounts USB drives, for RPI-RP2.

What it does

  • Fetches the latest release from GitHub, checked against its sha256 and block by block before anything is written.
  • Restarts SmartCW into the RP2040's own update mode, with !bootloader: a drive called RPI-RP2 appears, and you choose it once in a folder dialog.
  • Copies the firmware onto it: SmartCW writes it into its flash and restarts, in about ten seconds. Its config.txt is in a part of the flash the firmware never touches.
  • Update, and factory settings also loads the factory settings afterwards, your call and memories included, and restarts it.
